‘That Inward Eye,’ a group exhibition featuring three female artists who explore materiality, perception, and memory through abstract painting, is currently underway at Thaddaeus Ropac Seoul in Hannam-dong, Seoul. The exhibition highlights the unique working methods, intersections, and distinct qualities of Joan Snyder, Megan Rooney, and Han Bing—three artists raised and active in diverse cultures and environments—through 16 of their paintings.
Joan Snyder, a leading American female abstract artist, weaves autobiographical experiences, nature, and the properties of materials together using highly emotional brushstrokes that flow, blend, and vibrate across the canvas. Within her work, she harmonizes and transforms contrasting elements—such as wet and dry, soft and firm, light and dark—turning the canvas into a vibrant, living organism.
Megan Rooney repeatedly layers paint, pastel, and oil sticks on canvas before gently refining the surface with an electric sander. Through this process, the layers of accumulation and transformation coexist beautifully on the canvas, building a rich store of time and sensory experience.
Han Bing creates her compositions by applying paint to posters, advertisements, or newspapers gathered from cities, and repeatedly transferring them onto canvas or newsprint. Through this practice, she captures and accumulates the distinct landscapes and unique energies of different cities within her work.
