Sustainability

OUR SUSTAINABILITY COMMITMENTS

There are a number of key sustainability challenges that exist within our sector. At Thaddaeus Ropac, we recognise the importance of sustainability and are committed to measuring and reducing our environmental impact. We are setting targets and are taking actions in the knowledge that a lot of important work still lies ahead of us. We look forward to learning along the way as we continue to implement more sustainable practices into our gallery activities.

COMMITMENTS

As an international art gallery, we know that our main direct environmental impacts include transport of artworks, business travel, energy use in our buildings and waste creation. We have committed to tackling these impacts by:

  • Upholding our active membership with the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC) and supporting their aim to reduce the sector’s carbon emissions.
  • Regularly calculating the carbon footprint of our operations, to understand our emissions, to set targets and to track our progress towards them.
  • Reducing our own carbon footprint and developing company-specific reduction goals.
  • Fostering and facilitating further possibilities for collaboration within our industry.
  • Setting specific targets for the major parts of our footprint, including:
    • Replacing fossil gas heating systems with appropriate technology and switching to green electricity where possible.
    • Switching to low or zero-emissions vehicles for local deliveries.

ACTIONS

Some of the actions we are taking to meet these targets include:

  • Speaking to our suppliers and service providers about their carbon footprint and looking for opportunities to encourage them to take action, or to switch to alternative suppliers who will.
  • Carrying out energy audits of our buildings, to find opportunities for energy reduction and renewable energy generation, for switching to green electricity or removing oil as a heating source.
  • Analysing and planning our exhibitions and events with care to optimise freight transportation, travelling, and material usage.

Since joining the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC) in November 2020, we have achieved Active Member status for 2024 and are committed to maintaining this status. Thaddaeus Ropac supports this important initiative founded by gallerists and other art world professionals and is committed to collaborating closely with the GCC on the topic of sustainability. More information on the GCC can be found here.
