Antony Gormley: Drawing on Space Solo exhibition at Museum SAN, Wonju, South Korea
Museum SAN presents Drawing on Space, a solo exhibition by Antony Gormley, marking the largest exhibition of the artist’s work in Korea to date.
Antony Gormley's meditation on the human form – which began with casting his own body in plaster in the early years of his career, and in more recent years has expanded to increasingly deconstructed forms – breaks away from the traditional idea of sculpture as an object of representation and idealisation. To the artist, a sculpture no longer serves such a purpose. Rather, it functions as a site that can activate the mind, senses, and awareness of the viewers as they are invited to engage with the works and the surrounding space.
From the elusive bodies of Liminal Field to the spiralling microcosm of Orbit Field II to the series of drawings capturing the relationship between light and darkness, Drawing on Space traces all aspects of Gormley’s unique artistic journey over the past forty years.
This engagement with the body and space will also be echoed in Ground, a new permanent space at Museum SAN, created by Antony Gormley in collaboration with architect Tadao Ando, set to be unveiled with the opening of the exhibition.
