Georg Baselitz’s Die Reihen geschlossen (2019) forms part of a series of new works dedicated to his wife, Elke. Married for nearly sixty years, the portraits of Elke have been a recurring motif throughout his practice. The combination of grace and severity in the recent paintings represent a renewed declaration of love, as well as an intimate reflection on the inevitability of ageing and the function of portraiture. His use of gold mixed with paint is a formal innovation that surrounds the figures in a soft glow, recalling religious icons from the Byzantine tradition.
