Oskar Schlemmer’s Homo, Composition in Metal (1930/31) is a tripartite wall installation that crystallises the artistic polymath’s faith in the Gesamtkunstwerk or total work of art, an essential principle of the Bauhaus school he pioneered. At once a sculpture, a wall design and an architectural intervention, the work sheds light on Schlemmer’s multifaceted practice, while forming part of his longstanding investigation of the body in space.
