Rauschenberg in His Own Words 'I Don’t Think About Being Great: Selected Writings by Robert Rauschenberg'
The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation announce the release of I Don’t Think About Being Great: Selected Writings by Robert Rauschenberg, edited by Francine Snyder and published by Yale University Press. This collection reveals the artist’s gift for language and offers an intimate look at his creative process.
Robert Rauschenberg earned global acclaim for a six-decade career spanning painting, sculpture, photography, and performance. I Don’t Think About Being Great brings to light a lesser-known dimension of his artistry—his writing.
Although Rauschenberg self-identified as dyslexic, his notes, correspondence, and speeches reveal a keen sensitivity to words. This collection assembles 100 texts—many presented here for the first time—illustrated with reproductions in his own hand.
The writings illuminate key moments in his practice and thinking, from reflections on artistic freedom to environmental concerns. With an accompanying essay by artist Martha Tuttle on the significance of artists’ writings, this beautifully designed volume invites readers to experience Rauschenberg’s world through his voice.
