Heemin Chung: Elsewhere, Rhema, Open Torso Two-person exhibition with Joyul

3—28 September 2025
Maison Margiela Hannam Flagship, Seoul

Elsewhere, Rhema, Open Torso unfolds within a Western-style Korean house and garden, constructed in the latter half of the 20th century. Through their audiovisual practices, artists Heemin Chung and Joyul transform the space into a site of altered spatiality throughout the exhibition’s duration. In this carefully landscaped garden—an artificial terrain shaped by human hands—they conjure the sensory experience of an untamed forest, entangled and alive elsewhere. Thus, this place becomes something entirely other.

The exhibition title offers three interpretive paths through which the works may be approached. ‘Elsewhere’ evokes the perception of a jungle within the garden; ‘Rhema’ marks the moment when Joyul’s sound is materialized through Heemin Chung’s sculptures; and ‘Open Torso’ serves as a metaphor for Heemin’s pierced sculptures, which absorb their surroundings and transform into both landscape and passage way.
