Goyas Hund und Lady Gaga Martha Jungwirth
Atmospherically dense on cardboard and paper: Viennese painter Martha Jungwirth shows furious new paintings at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf.
This probably falls under Viennese charm: Last year, Martha Jungwirth gallantly titled a double portrait Kommen zwei Arschlöcher zur Tür herein ("Two assholes walk in the door"). The portrait with the defiant title is dedicated to two gentlemen who wandered into her studio unannounced and apparently behaved with little chivalry. If it was the painter's revenge on the unwanted guests, it could have been worse for them. Certainly, they may look a little stiff in the hips, perhaps even a little dumb, but in their appearance they are charged with the skillful stylistic abbreviations, the masterful abstractions and translations into the painterly, which the Viennese artist, born in 1940, has always understood.
