Mandy El-Sayegh | Performance MOVE 2022 Festival

22 October 2022
Centre Pompidou

In her paintings, table vitrines, immersive installations and videos, Mandy El-Sayegh creates layered anthologies of found text and images from a variety of sources.

These include newsprint, advertisements, aerial maps, anatomy books and her father's Arabic calligraphy, all of which take on new and unexpected meanings when brought together. Detached from their original context, these fragments open up to multiple readings, determined by personal, social or political factors, and challenge the supposed objectivity of language and the media. The notion of corporeality is crucial in El-Sayegh's work - she refers to her collage process as 'suturing' and her painted surfaces as 'skins'.
