Alvaro Barrington Notting Hill Carnival
28—29 August 2022
On the occasion of Notting Hill Carnival, Alvaro Barrington has invited architect Sumayya Vally to create an interactive pavilion to function as a site of gathering, resting, watching, and celebrating along the masqueraders’ route.
Since meeting in London in 2021, Barrington and Vally have engaged in ongoing conversations about how we exist in and move through space and how the spaces we create collectively shape our experiences of the world at large. Vally’s pavilion—inspired by the stories, characters, and costumes of Carnival—will be installed in an incomplete state in advance of the Carnival opening ceremony, during which community members will place the final pieces of the pavilion to make it complete.
