Jason Martin: a landscape painter dressed up as an abstractionist

March 2022
Seoul Fort Hill

In many ways, his works are distinguished by two distinct aspects. Martin has spent decades perfecting what he invented as a student at Goldsmiths in the 1990s. Using tools he created, the artist creates monochromatic artworks laden with oil paint or acrylic gel on metal or Plexiglas grounds rather than canvas. His repeated brushstrokes allow layers of paint to adhere and leave their marks on the canvas. His painting enlarges its body and breathes life into it.  The combination of colours, tools and materials endows his paintings with sculptural qualities. The artist frequently refers to himself as "a landscape painter disguised as an abstractionist." His monochromatic paintings depict waves and a flower cluster. This can be seen in the artist's attitude toward his life, which he divides between London and Portugal.
