Imi Knoebel Red Yellow Blue

12 March—16 May 2016
Museum Der Bildenden Künste Leipzig

Red Yellow Blue (1993) is composed of 54 large-scale silkscreen prints, which are an important conceptual foundation for Knoebel’s design of the stained glass windows of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Reims. This major commission of nine large panes for the royal cathedral was installed between 2011 and 2015.

The abstract compositions for Reims, with hundreds of pieces of glass in vivid shades of red, blue and yellow can be seen as a reconciliatory gesture following the building having been badly damaged by German bombing in August 1914.
