Sylvie Fleury: Thunderb Solo show at the Mrac, Musée régional d’art contemporain
Through pop aesthetics and materials – even objects – borrowed from the worlds of luxury, fashion, cosmetics and even automobiles, Sylvie Fleury exposes the paradoxes of our culture obsessed with appearances and image. She uses the language of advertising and marketing not to sell a product but to analyse the machine that manufactures consumer desire. The artist presents iconic installations such as Shopping Bags—a ready-made work resulting from a day of shopping—sculptures and paintings that humorously subvert the minimalist works of modern American artists, neon pieces featuring advertising slogans, videos featuring women and vintage cars, paintings inspired by famous brands of make-up palettes, and an in situ mural, a nod to the artist Daniel Buren.
