Colors of Korea: Spotlight on Contemporary Korean Art Group exhibition featuring work by Lee Kang So and Heemin Chung
Colors of Korea: Spotlight on Contemporary Korean Art (Couleurs de Corée, Lumière sur l’art contemporain coréen), held at the Centre Culturel Coréen in Paris, will open with the work of Lee Kang So and Heemin Chung, two artists whose distinct practices reflect the dynamic evolution of Korean contemporary art.
Bringing together 34 Korean artists across generations, the exhibition commemorates the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and France by exploring the deep cultural symbolism of color in Korean art. From historical masters to emerging voices, the show spans a broad range of media—including painting, sculpture, installation, photography, and digital art—and highlights how the traditional five-color spectrum (white, black, red, yellow, and blue), rooted in the philosophy of yin and yang and the five elements, continues to shape artistic expression today.
Colors of Korea positions color not only as an aesthetic element, but as a powerful cultural language—one that bridges memory and imagination, the past and the present. The exhibition invites viewers to consider how Korean artists engage with enduring visual traditions while responding to the complexities of contemporary life.
