New art routes in the city. Ropac opens with Fontana and Baselitz The gallery officially inaugurates its activity in Milan

20 September 2025

There's a new art address for art lovers starting today. It's the Thaddaeus Ropac gallery, which opens to the public in the spaces of Palazzo Belgioioso, designed by Giuseppe Piermarini in 1772. The inaugural exhibition (The Dawn Comes is the title, free admission, Tuesday to Saturday 11 am - 7 pm) is dedicated to the works of Georg Baselitz and Lucio Fontana , revealing the German artist's deep and enduring interest in the work of the Italian-Argentine master. A dialogue between the two artists that is compelling from the outset, with paintings and sculptures in dialogue: works by Baselitz from the last decade, alongside pieces by Fontana dating from the 1930s to the 1960s.

Among these, a significant group of works has been loaned by the Lucio Fontana Foundation. Thus, one can admire Baselitz's La scuola di Lucio (2019), along with a sculpture by Fontana, Guerriero (1953), and Concetto spaziale Aluminium (1964–65). On display in the gallery's main room is an extraordinary example of Fontana's Fine di Dio series, considered the pinnacle of his practice, produced in 38 pieces between 1963 and 1964.
