Thaddaeus Ropac opens in September with Baselitz and Fontana

13 June 2025
[...]  The very first Milanese exhibition, titled  "The Dawn Comes," will be a dialogue between Baselitz and Fontana, presenting works from the Baselitz archive alongside core collections from the Lucio Fontana Foundation . It will also include some previously unseen works, never exhibited before, that Baselitz dedicated to the master of Spatialism. This preview sends an important signal about the direction of the new Milanese space: it will be a place where an "intellectual exchange" will take place through the work of great artists. "Interpretation is of no use to any artist," Baselitz explains. "Now, at my age, it's more about intellectual exchange than dependence."

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog with essays by Flavia Frigeri, Curatorial and Collections Director of the National Portrait Gallery in London, and Luca Massimo Barbero, Member of the Artistic Commission of the Lucio Fontana Foundation and a leading scholar of Fontana's work. "Milan is the crossroads of Europe," said gallery owner Thaddaeus Ropac, "Italy, the beating heart of the continent: a country that has profoundly shaped the evolution of art over the centuries and where crucial modern art movements were born. We have always felt the absence of Italy in our constellation of European galleries, believing it to be important for our international growth and the development of our artists." A new chapter for the gallery will officially open after the summer.
