Joseph Beuys Featured in the 13th Seoul Mediacity Biennale
Joseph Beuys’s iconic performance I Like America and America Likes Me (1974) is featured in the 13th Seoul Mediacity Biennale, Séance: Technology of the Spirit, on view at the Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul until 23 November 2025.
Curated by Artistic Directors Anton Vidokle, Hallie Ayres, and Lukas Brasiskis, this edition of the Biennale explores the role of spiritual experience in shaping modern and contemporary art, situating historical figures alongside leading voices of today. Beuys’s practice—conceived as a means of healing and restoring balance—resonates deeply with the exhibition’s investigation into art as a 'technology of the spirit.' The Biennale brings together over 50 international artists, from pioneers such as Hilma af Klint, Nam June Paik, and Emma Kunz, to a new generation of artists engaging with anticolonial, ecological, and feminist perspectives.
