Imi Knoebel: etcetera Exhibition review by Laurent Boudier
By Laurent Boudier
Every season brings a new discovery at Galerie Ropac. These days, we can see the surprising paintings of German artist Imi Knoebel: large canvases on the ground floor and more modest formats upstairs. At the same time, it marks a turning point in the career of this 84-year-old artist, whose abstract style of ‘coloured minimalism’ (an art of geometric interplay through colour that has made his reputation in France) is evolving towards a much lighter, freer, more playful gesture. A letting go that delights, astonishes and disturbs the retina.
