Ringturm Wrapping Vienna Marcin Maciejowski transforms the Ringturm in Vienna into a larger-than-life artwork
Since 2006, Vienna’s Ringturm, the corporate headquarters of the Vienna Insurance Group, has been transformed into an oversized screen during the summer months. By commissioning renowned artists, the project is making an important contribution to art in public spaces, promoting artists and contributing to the colourful cityscape of Vienna's inner city. This year, the Ringturm is being wrapped by Marcin Maciejowski.
With this work, created especially for the Ringturm, the building appears in the guise of an oversized library. The atmosphere is intimate and homely, making it clear that this is a private home. While the side facing the Danube Canal shows the domestic wall of books, the back reads “This book will not only become my story, but also yours” in German and Polish. This is Maciejowski's way of describing the moment in which an idea is transferred from one person to the next. The man depicted in front of the library, who is reaching for a special book on a higher shelf, wants to share it with someone. “Books not only contain the authors' wealth of experience. They promote understanding between people, build bridges and connect cultures. Books are the window to the world and the work at the Ringturm becomes an interface between the spiritual inner world and public life,” explains Maciejowski. The wrapping covers 4,000 square meters and consists of a total of 30 printed mesh panels measuring around three meters wide and up to 63 meters long.
