Anselm Kiefer's childhood home converted into an exhibition space Currently on view: early works by Anselm Kiefer
Anselm Kiefer's childhood home in Rastatt-Ottersdorf will open on Sunday 27 April with an exhibition of early works by the artist.
The former schoolhouse was built in 1875 and converted into teachers' flats after the school moved in 1936. Anselm Kiefer, born in 1945 in Donaueschingen, whose father was a teacher in Ottersdorf, lived in this house from 1951 to 1957 before the family moved to Rastatt-Niederbühl.
In 2019, Kiefer acquired his childhood home in Ottersdorf in order to restore it and open it up for exhibitions. The house was restored to the way he experienced it in his childhood.
The opening exhibition shows works from the 70s and 80s, when Kiefer worked in his studios in Hornbach and Buchen in the Odenwald. He has been living in France since 1992.
