Josephsohn vu par Albert Oehlen A retrospective of the Swiss sculptor's work at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris

Pour la première rétrospective en France consacrée au sculpteur suisse Hans Josephsohn (1920–2012), le Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris confie le commissariat artistique à Albert Oehlen (né en 1954) qui propose une exploration libre des œuvres de l'artiste. Artiste majeur ayant contribué au renouvellement de la peinture allemande ces trente dernières années, Albert Oehlen est un admirateur du travail de Hans Josephsohn qu’il découvre au Kesselhaus Josephsohn à Saint-Gall où il réside. Ce lieu dédié aux œuvres du sculpteur est à la fois un espace d’exposition et de conservation d’où proviennent une grande partie des sculptures visibles dans l’exposition. En interrogeant le processus créatif de Hans Josephsohn – le dialogue avec la matière, l’expérience du geste, le fragment et l’inlassable recherche – en résonance avec ses propres investigations, Albert Oehlen livre une expérience artistique et vivante de sa sculpture. L’œuvre de Hans Josephsohn fascine les artistes par la puissance de son langage plastique. Peter Fischli et David Weiss figurent parmi ses premiers soutiens, et, en 2007, Ugo Rondinone montre plusieurs nus couchés au Palais de Tokyo dans son exposition The Third Mind.

For the first retrospective in France dedicated to the Swiss sculptor Hans Josephsohn (1920-2012), the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris has entrusted the artistic curation to Albert Oehlen (b. 1954), whose curation encourages an open exploration of the artist's work. Albert Oehlen, a major artist who has contributed to the renewal of German painting over the last thirty years, is an admirer of the work of Hans Josephsohn, whom he discovered at the Kesselhaus Josephsohn in St Gallen, where he lives. The Kesselhaus Josephsohn is both an exhibition space and a repository for the sculptor's work, from which many of the sculptures in the exhibition originate. In resonance with his own work, Albert Oehlen questions Hans Josephsohn's creative process – a dialogue with matter, the experience of gesture, the fragment and the endless search – to deliver a dynamic artistic experience of his sculpture. Hans Josephsohn's work fascinates artists with the power of its plastic language. Peter Fischli and David Weiss were among his first supporters, and in 2007, Ugo Rondinone showed several reclining nudes at the Palais de Tokyo in his exhibition The Third Mind.
