20th Anniversary Exhibition Breaking Down Walls! The Collections

2 February—9 October 2024
Museum der Moderne, Salzburg

The 20th anniversary of the Mönchsberg location provides an opportunity to focus on exhibiting works from the museum's collections. For most of this year, two levels on the Mönchsberg will be used to show four exhibitions from the collections. The concept and content of these four parts are revealed in their titles.

The exhibition Breaking Down Walls! reflects on the insights of the intellectual movement known as the spatial turn, which emphasizes the vital importance of space or the conception of space as an analytical instrument. Its focus is not just on the static space of geometry but on space as a phenomenon shaped, experienced, and coded by humans. This shift of significance toward a construct informed by social and cultural factors is fueled not only by the growing mobility of our society, but also by forced migration, territorial conflicts, and changes in the climate.

The exhibition sheds light on how space, bodies, and media condition one another. It zooms in on interfaces, in-between spaces, and areas of transition and expands the museum space by integrating spaces of action, experience, and recollection. Tracing a long arc from classic modernism to new media art, it showcases works by Sylvie Fleury, Martha Jungwirth, Markus Schinwald and Erwin Wurm (amongst others).

Curators: Barbara Herzog, Harald Krejci, Tina Teufel
