Rachel Jones: Behind All the Colours Lie Many Lives
Exhibition Review by Bernhard Flieher
It feels as if the images leap out at you straight from the canvas. This in itself is enough for a pleasurable experience, this immersion into a wild world between small patterns, sometimes strictly discrete, sometimes merging surfaces, all rendered in an intense range of colours. ‘I want to translate all that lust for self-expression into a language that exists outside of words, and instead relates to seeing and feeling with your eyes.’ says British artist Rachel Jones about what fundamentally drives her work. This seeing and feeling immediately comes across at the first impression of her first show at Ropac in Salzburg. It is truly dazzling, but there is more to it than that.
