Interview with Tate Britain director Alex Farquharson "We want to tell the story of British art that is also the story of Britain"

“These galleries [there are about 40 of them] offer a wonderful opportunity to journey though time from the Tudors to today,” Farquharson says. “But the story of Britain is both national and international. Our local history has a wider context and so the three main ‘banners’ under which we have been working are: how to relate art to society, Britain to the world, and history to the present.
