Artist Rachel Jones will be in conversation with curator and researcher Cynthia Igbokwe, introduced by Mark Rappolt, Editor-in-Chief of ArtReview, to mark the publication of the catalogue, a shorn root, which has been released to accompany the artist’s solo exhibition of the same name, currently on view at The Long Museum, Shanghai.

Working in painting, installation, sound and performance, Rachel Jones explores a sense of self as a visual, visceral experience. In her paintings, she grapples with the challenges of finding visual means to convey abstract, existential concepts. The artist repeats motifs and symbols across her series to create associative, even familial, relationships between them, underscoring their kinship as part of her ongoing investigation of identity.

Cynthia Igbokwe is a London-based curator and researcher who’s work explores diverse themes in cultural theory and technology, alongside sonic and visual art. She has contributed a visual essay to the catalogue, and building on this collaboration the pair will discuss the key themes of the exhibition and the developments that it marks in Rachel Jones’ artistic practice. Their discussion will be followed by a Q&A.
