Talk – Springboard: The opportunities and challenges on the other side of graduation. Rachel Jones

After the degree show…what next? Graduating art students often ask themselves what lies beyond in the wide and often opaque sector when their studies come to an end. This panel discussion starts to answer this question, looking at issues facing contemporary graduates who want to develop their art careers against a backdrop of increasingly high living costs and difficulties in accessing affordable studio spaces across the country.

Springboard brings together a panel with wide experience of the journeys of emerging artists across both the commercial and not-for-profit sector. Working as artists, curators and gallerists, they share their varied experiences and illuminate systems and structures in place to support those embarking in the field.

Kirsty Ogg, Director of New Contemporaries, chairs the conversation and is joined by artist Rachel Jones, Russell Martin (artist and Director, Artquest, a public programme of University of the Arts London) and Ellie Pennick (CEO & Founder, Guts Gallery).

Springboard is hosted by Freelands Foundation to coincide with the Freelands Painting Prize 2022, the third exhibition of winning graduate painters in our annual competition celebrating outstanding painting at undergraduate level. The exhibition will be open to visit from 12– 6pm.

The event is free and open to all. Please reserve your place here.

The conversation will be followed by an audience Q&A.
Please arrive at the gallery 15 minutes before the talk starts.
A subtitled recording will be available to watch online after the event.
