Overview

Thaddaeus Ropac Salzburg presents a series of new paintings by Alex Katz, titled Black Roses. Flowers have featured in the American artist’s work throughout his career. In 1966, for the first time, they became the main subject of a monumental series of paintings, and since then, Katz has continuously returned to this motif in his work. The roses in this series testify to his sustained exploration of abstraction: Katz distils the motif into rhythmically arranged areas of opaque fields of paint. Whilst he is known for his striking use of colour, here Katz emphasises the basic shapes of petals and buds by restricting his palette to black or orange on white, creating dynamic compositions that appear as snapshots of an ongoing movement.
