Created in 2021, Untitled (Mixed white / Viridian) belongs to a recent body of work by Jason Martin that exhibits a lightness of touch and delicacy of tone that sets it apart from the thick impasto and highly saturated colours typical of his earlier work. Inspired by the colour palette of Venetian painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696—1770), the artist employs ‘transparent colours that suggest celestial skies and tropical waters. There are no earth tones, no direct references in colour to the earth. I wanted Tiepolo skies and warm equatorial waters. A positive escape,’ says the artist. The aluminium support captures and reflects light, imbuing the painting with a radiant luminosity.
