New Paintings and Drawings
The nocturnal seascape in Miquel Barceló’s Dernière pleine lune de l’été (2018–19) recalls the Impressionists’ emphasis on the fleeting effects of light, atmosphere and weather. The artist’s native Mallorca inspired his recent works, in which the sky dominates the composition and nature is registered as an elemental force. The ever-changing forms of sea and clouds are captured with a soft touch that blurs any definitive outline, creating nebulous shapes and eliding the distinction between sea and sky. Paradoxically, he renders the liquidity of the sea using a dry brush technique to create highly tactile areas of paint, with horizontal striations that seem to indicate the movement of the water.
