New Paintings and Drawings
In Christy (2010), Alex Katz explores the subtleties of human facial expressions, as indicated by a faraway gaze, an enigmatic smile or the arch of an eyebrow. This is intensified through the close cropping and cinematic lighting of the portrait, in which the woman’s face fills the pictorial space, framed by her dark hair and the black background. Katz’s subject is the American supermodel Christy Turlington, who first came to fame in the early 1990s and also appears in his seminal Black Dress series. The artist’s minimal aesthetic and the pristine flatness of his painted surfaces anticipated Pop art, but he considers himself instead a painter of the ‘immediate present’.
