In Blume (1997), Arnulf Rainer explores the interactions of colour, space, surface and light through the gestural application of translucent layers of pigment. As a pioneer of Art Informel, his work brought an intuitive form of lyrical expression into the field of abstraction. The delicacy of the washes of orange and yellow are at odds with the explosive circular form and gestural drips, which radiate outwards like the rays of the sun. The artist has described painting as a form of spiritual awareness, which comes to the fore in this painting, revealing his interest in mysticism, the subconscious and the cosmos.
