Sean Scully Song of Colors

3 April—7 August 2022
Langen Foundation Neuss, Germany

The Langen Foundation presents Sean Scully, one of the most important abstract painters of his generation, whose works have internationally exhibited for over fifty years.

The exhibition Song of Colors contains more then fifty works by Sean Scully (*1945 Dublin) from different creative phases. Their selection is based on the relationship between his artistic creations and music. "I grew up in a world of music. I am Irish, so my understanding of the world is mainly formed through its floating, repetitive rhythms mirrored in the relentless power and melancholy of Irish music."

The spectrum of the works presented ranges from early works on paper from the late 1960s to his expansive paintings, in which he constantly varies and expressively develops the recurring motif of the grid and plays with the power of color. "A stripe is a note; many are a chord. All are played by hand. An image should express emotions. A rhythm played by hand, painted differently in each image."

For several years, Scully has been sculpturally expanding his precise compositions of form and color. As examples, the Langen Foundation is showing three monumental sculptures in the outdoor area, in which the leitmotifs of his paintings are reflected in the sculptures.
