Screening: Emilio Vedova. Dalla parte del naufragio
26 February 2022 | 2–6pm (on loop)
Ely House, London
Please join us on Saturday 26 February for a screening of the film Emilio Vedova. Dalla parte del naufragio (Emilio Vedova. On the side of the shipwreck). The film allows privileged access to the artist's inner life through his own diaries, read by actor Toni Servillo, alongside never-before-seen footage of Vedova at work in his studio. Servillo has won the European Film Award for Best Actor twice, in 2008 and 2013, as well as the David di Donatello Award for Best Actor four times from 2002–2013. 'When we thought about how to portray an artist on screen, our first answer was: through the physicality of his brushstrokes. Our second answer was: in his own words. These were the two cornerstones of our investigation into Vedova,' explains director Tomaso Pessina. 'Vedova's painting reflects the volcanic personality of a witness to troubled times, all against the sumptuous backdrop of the city of Venice, in all its splendor and shadows.' The film also features interviews with influential art-world figures who knew him personally, including Georg Baselitz, Germano Celant and Karole Vail, who reflect on Vedova's enduring influence.
Emilio Vedova. Dalla parte del naufragio debuted at the 76th Venice Film Festival in 2019, marking the centenary of the Italian artist's birth. The current screening coincides with the exhibition Emilio Vedova: documenta 7, now on view at our London gallery.
