Young at art: five millennial artists to check out this year Alvaro Barrington
The son of Grenadian and Haitian migrant workers, Alvaro Barrington, 38, who has just had his first solo institutional show at the South London Gallery, was brought up between the Caribbean and New York. Perhaps its hardly surprising that his artistic practice — primarily painting but with a whole load of other stuff (old clothing, postcards and burlap sacking) thrown in — is a lot about entangling cultures, about the ways in which diverse materials, and the real and the virtual can merge. The result is seductive.
