Georg Baselitz Baselitz – Vedova

30 September 2016—29 January 2017
MKM Museum Küppersmühle Für Moderne Kunst

In a joint exhibition the MKM is featuring the works of two highly influential artists: Georg Baselitz, the internationally acclaimed German painter and sculptor, and Emilio Vedova, one of the leading exponents of the European Informel style. The two shared an intensive, deeply personal relationship and a mutual admiration tracing back to the 1960s, which endured until Vedova's death in 2006. At the Venice Biennial in the following year, both artists were exhibited jointly for the first time.

The show in the MKM seeks to engage Vedova's late paintings from the 1980s in dialogue with a series of works by Baselitz from the year 2015. Its primary focus is the exploration of some crucial issues confronting painting, in particular the significance of the centre of the canvas. Works by Baselitz spanning the 1960s to the 1980s are also on view in the MKM's permanent collection.

The exhibition Baselitz - Vedova is being staged in cooperation with the Fondazione Emilio e Annabianca Vedova. Curators are Fabrizio Gazzarri and Walter Smerling.
