Sturtevant: Zip Zap ! One of six exhibitions to see in October

16 October 2024
Paris Marais

Why you should go: It's been ten years since the American artist disappeared, in 2014, forty years after her first rehearsal consisting of reproducing, from memory, works by her contemporaries, from Marcel Duchamp to Claes Oldenburg.

What we see: a platform lined with light bulbs evokes the presence-absence of a go-go dancer - whose performance remains unpredictable. This repetition of Félix González-Torres's Untitled (Go-Go Dancing Platform, 1991) is at the centre of an exhibition that spans five decades of creation, from the Johns Flag painting (1965-1966) presented at his first gallery show in Paris, to a multi-screen video installation.

What we like: This exhibition marks the centenary of Sturtevant ‘s birth: his critique of the supposed authenticity of works of art, which calls into question the notion of authorship, is more relevant than ever in the age of AI and the accelerated circulation of images on social networks.
