Gilbert & George in conversation With Nicholas Cullinan as part of Charleston Festival 2024

23 May 2024
Charleston, Firle

For over 50 years, the iconic art duo Gilbert & George have been chronicling the world around them with vivid, graphic works that challenges as much as it entertains. Their extraordinary artistic partnership, in which they have become living sculptures, is embedded in their belief that great art is necessarily personal and deeply serious.

Far from being cosy, national treasures, their work blazes with anger and over the years has generated both celebration and criticism. From intimate postcards to epic photomontages, their work reflects the turmoil of modern life back at us, with its shifting attitudes to violence, class, religion and identity.

In conversation with Nicholas Cullinan, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, they will discuss life, art, provocation and transgression.
