Lay Some Pipe《
From dance party, to road trip, to poche vide (a place to empty your pocketsas you enter your home), to laboratory, to bachelor pad to iPhone dock, sound systems have always been a part of my work and will be as long as I continue to love music. - Tom Sachs
Lay Some Pipe (2014) belongs to the ongoing series of Boombox works commenced by American artist Tom Sachs in 1999. He employs a bricolage technique to fabricate sound systems out of everyday materials. Sustaining his signature DIY aesthetic, he retains his pencil construction marks on the works, illustrating the process of their creation. The resultant sculptural forms extend the experience of listening to music to a visual register as each boombox takes on a unique aesthetic. An icon of street culture, the boombox allows Sachs to interrogate power structures within the music and art industries, as well as wider consumer culture at large.
The work was included in the solo exhibition Tom Sachs: Boombox Retrospective, 1999-2022 at HYBE INSIGHT, Seoul from 22 June to 11 September 2022.
