The elongated figure in Step (Taschenskulpturen) (2021) is a continuation of Erwin Wurm’s investigation into the anthropomorphic qualities of objects, in this case a designer handbag that has sprouted legs. According to the artist, ‘it’s not a question of creating a cynical image of human figures […] but of bringing out an abstract quality in everyday realities.’ In his bag sculptures, he draws attention to their function as containers for the possessions we carry with us, as well as their role as social and cultural signifiers. As the protective coverings in which people appear in public, clothing and accessories inform our physical and psychological image in our own eyes, as well as in those of the world around us.
