Martha Jungwirth’s process follows a rhythm involving the body, with finger marks, blotches and scratches remaining as a visceral record of her presence in her work. Her paintings convey a palpable sense of self while drawing upon a rich breadth of influences, including travel, media, mythology and the history of art, to develop an idiosyncratic approach to painting. As she has described, ‘my art is like a diary, seismographic. That is the method of my work. I am completely related to myself.’ In the untitled work from 2023, strokes of pink, light blue and pastel yellow paint gather as a dense presence in the centre of the painting, bearing witness to the physical intensity of the artist’s process, with areas of untouched cardboard playing a crucial role in the composition.
