The slippage between the words ‘hot’ and ‘warm’ is reinforced by El-Sayegh’s inclusion of screen-printed Chicanery playing cards in each painting. Chicanery is a word game that employs bluffing and deception to outsmart opponents. In this game, players match descriptions to a set of obscure words, such as asdic or axilla, to name and fix them in place. The artist uses this game as an entry-point to explore the historical slippage and erasure that occurs through language.
