In his drawings David Salle experiments with composition, colour and line with an exceptional fluidity. In a recent interview he acknowledged the importance of this process: ‘These are all beginnings with that kind of observational line, you look at something and you render it with a brush. The energy of that is still in the paintings even though the paintings are built up in a much more complex, and much more laborious, long-term process. The energy in the brushline in the drawing, to me is still pretty fundamental.’
