Anselm Kiefer Für Paul Celan - Angewintertes, 2014–2022
The densely layered works of German artist Anselm Kiefer are informed by a variety of historical, mythological and literary sources that reflect the artist’s preoccupation with memory and history, their preservation and erosion. This is expressed not only thematically,
but also on the level of form itself, through his treatment of materials and use of texture. Throughout his oeuvre, the artist, who grew up as part of a generation which was deeply marked by the aftermath of the Second World War, has reflected on the German philosopher Theodor Adorno’s famous dictum that ‘there can be no poetry after Auschwitz.’
