Martha Jungwirth Ohne Titel (Fussballspieler), 2022
Pursuing her own, distinctive path, Martha Jungwirth has forged a singular approach to abstraction grounded in the body and her closely observed perceptions of the world around her. Her work draws on various sources – the human body, travelling, art history, mythology, historical, social and political contexts – capturing fleeting, internal impulses that are recorded in paint.
For Ohne Titel (Fussballspieler) (2022) Jungwirth abstracted images from a selection of illustrations and newspaper clippings that she collects and pins to her studio wall, where soccer players are juxtaposed with Old Master paintings depicting heroes of antiquity. ‘A different setting,’ she explains, ‘but I am interested in the similarity in expression, the dynamic of the gestures.’
A major career retrospective is currently on view at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf until 20 November 2022.
