Ana Sacerdote Azul y Celeste (Blue & Skyblue), 1956
Although Ana Sacerdote (b. 1925) began painting at the age of fifteen, her incomparable foray into abstraction has only recently been rediscovered. This lack of recognition is attributed to her largely nomadic life, beginning with her immigration to Argentina in fleeing Italian Fascism. After interacting with concrete and abstract artists in Buenos Aires in the mid-50s, and painting her first works with forms inspired by abstraction, the artist traveled to Paris on a fellowship in 1956. That is where she painted Azul y Celeste (1956), overlapping different shades of blue to create a structure comparable to a musical score.
