Née en 1964 de parents dissidents sous la dictature de Park Chung-hee, la Sud-Coréenne Lee Bul a sa manière féerique de transformer ce qui est caché en objet mystérieusement beau. Entre sculpture et architecture, elle met en forme les complexes niveaux de lecture d’un fait, d’un moment, d’une idée. En 1997, son Majestic Splendor était au MoMA de New York, un poisson desséché entouré de paillettes, pour témoigner de l’éphémère de la beauté et de la fragilité de la situation des femmes. Scandale et notoriété. (...) Avec Perdu, chez Thaddaeus Ropac, titre en hommage à la Recherche, elle explore la peinture acrylique dont elle additionne les couches, puis les excave. Plus on s’approche, plus on plonge dans ce mirage géologique. Elle travaille aussi la nacre de façon virtuose et compose avec elle un futur du monde, entre utopie et désintégration.

Born in 1964 to dissident parents under the dictatorship of Park Chung-hee, South Korean artist Lee Bul has her own magical way of transforming what is hidden into a mysteriously beautiful object. Between sculpture and architecture, she shapes the complex levels of reading a fact, a moment, an idea. In 1997, her Majestic Splendor was at MoMA in New York, a dried-up fish surrounded by sequins, to bear witness to the ephemerality of beauty and the fragility of the situation of women. Scandal and notoriety. (...) With Perdu, at Thaddaeus Ropac, a title in homage to (Marcel Proust's) "La Recherche", she explores acrylic paint, adding up the layers, then excavating them. The closer you get, the more you dive into this geological mirage. She also works with mother-of-pearl in a virtuoso way and composes with it a future of the world, between utopia and disintegration.
