Considérez-vous vos interventions comme un hommage ou une conversation avec Auguste Rodin ?

Antony Gormley : Les deux. Pour moi, il est le premier sculpteur vraiment moderne. Il remettait toujours en question les idées reçues sur les possibilités de la sculpture. (...) Quand j'ai fait Critical Mass, je l'ai considéré comme une sorte de contestation de l'idée de monument commémoratif de la guerre, de l'héroïsme militaire. (...) J'utilise le corps à la fois comme matériel, sujet et outil. Au début, j'utilisais des moulages, mais maintenant, j'utilise les scans, ce sont les outils de mon temps. (...)

Do you see your work as a tribute to or a conversation with Auguste Rodin?

Antony Gormley: Both. For me, he was the first truly modern sculptor. He always challenged preconceived ideas about the possibilities of sculpture. (...) When I made Critical Mass, I saw it as a kind of challenge to the idea of the war memorial, of military heroism. (...) I use the body as material, subject and tool. In the beginning, I used casts, but now I use scans, these are the tools of my time (...)
