To create Purr (Night Shade) (1991), Robert Rauschenberg silkscreened images onto mirrored or brushed aluminium, applying a tarnish called Aluma Black with gestural strokes. The iconography combines three separate images: a cat at bottom right that he photographed in New York in 1981, a bus he saw in Cozumel, Mexico in 1988 and a delicate grouping of butterflies from Malaysia in 1989. The work’s title references the cat, but has added significance as the ‘purr’ of the bus engine. Countering the innate flatness of his imagery, Rauschenberg modelled the surface with deep blacks, swaths of silvery greys, and highlights from the partially reflective areas that remain exposed.
