Oliver Beer Recomposition (Labyrinth), 2021
To create Recomposition (Labyrinth) (2021), Oliver Beer sliced through coloured pencils and set them in resin, sanding the surface to a perfectly flat pictorial plane before hand- painting the resin with white gesso. Using a technique unique to his practice, he converts three dimensions into two, creating a kind of ‘physical cubism’ in which multiple perspectives can be simultaneously perceived. Here, the fundamental drawing tools are transformed, becoming both the subject and the medium of the work. The vibrant colour range recalls the historic links between sound and colour that have formed part of Beer’s recent research projects.
