Uptown Swing (2022) is representative of Rooney’s painting process in which she builds up layers of colour through a gestural application of paint, which are then stripped back and sanded down, only to be built up again. Her canvases are all the same size (150 x 200cm) – just over the average woman’s height and armspan width. They pose a series of quiet invitations, asking the viewer to look and look again.
